Water softeners in Pine Island

Softener, filter and well-water help along the Highway 52 corridor north of Rochester.

Pine Island straddles the Goodhue and Olmsted county line on the Middle Fork of the Zumbro River, with U.S. Highway 52 as its main route to Rochester. The city had 3,769 residents in 2020 and is shifting from a farm town toward a bedroom community for Rochester. Its name comes from the Dakota name for the area, meaning island of pines.

City water in Pine Island

Pine Island operates its own municipal water system, so check the city's annual drinking water report rather than RPU's. As with most of southeastern Minnesota's groundwater, expect hard water, and confirm the actual number with a test before sizing a softener.

Rural homes north of Rochester

Much of the land between Pine Island, Oronoco and Rochester is farmland and acreages, and those homes usually have private wells. Olmsted County notes there are more than 36,000 private wells in the region and that testing and maintenance fall to the homeowner. If your well is in the Goodhue County part of the area, check with that county as well. Iron, nitrate or bacteria may need attention before a softener will work well.

Older farmhouses

Many rural homes here were built decades ago and have had plumbing added in stages. A water treatment company will want to see where the pressure tank and well line come in, where a drain is available, and whether there's room for a softener and any pre-filter in the basement.
